This carefully hand wood carved image of the Hindu God Guarda ws purchased about 1955 in Hawaii. It has only been in a display cabinet. It is 11" Tall on a 3" x 3" base. It light weighs (6 ozs.) Beautifully hand painted in absolute mint condition. The bottom label says made in indonesia however is quite faded and difficult to photograph.Outstanding details and very striking colors.This wooden sculpture of a bird-like creature is found i...n many parts of South East Asia. In Thailand and Indonesia he is their national symbol, and is part of the Buddhist faith.In India he is the god or deity known as 'Garuda' and is part of the Hindu group of gods. His job is to carry the important god Vishnu on his back and there are stories about him in the Hindu story called The Mahabaratha. Sometimes a Garuda sculpture would be placed in the rafters of peoples’ houses. He is known for getting rid of snakes
