This is an antique Japanese mid Meiji Era (c. 1890) lacquer kashizara (appetizer plate) made of hand turned cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of black and burgundy lacquer. It has artwork depicting chrysanthemum. The artwork is hand painted in makie (raised gold lacquer). Japanese lacquer from the early Meiji era is considered the finest in the world. It is durable enough to withstand the harshest treatment the centuries have thrown at it.Ha...ving been in storage for over a century with almost no signs of past use, this kashizara remains in very fine condition throughout and is in good polish. Measures 9 1/2" in diameter by 1" tall(24 x 2.5 cm).
