I believe this is an original Native American piece, probably Penobscot (now collectively known along with 3 other tribes as Wabanaki) of Maine.
Numbered on the bottom (see pic #5). Research yielded no info on this : ( but I think it is probably significant, while as it first appears to read "TWO/300", a closer inspection has me wondering if the first... 3 characters are symbols and not English?
Beautiful weaving, with the lid utilizing pine needles woven in around the rim (see pics #6 and #7). Fancy woven top handle.
*Originally green colored splints have now significantly faded on top, but still show on the inside and bottom. I've read this color was quite popular in the 1920's.
There is no broken weave or breaks, but the basket base does feel slightly loosened. Not enough to effect the looks or function at all.
Measures approximately 10" across and 2.5" high.
