Made by the Lionel Company (the toy company pressedinto service during World War II). It was on one of the life boats on a liberty ship that was sunk off the US coast near New York. It was recovered when the people in the lifeboat were picked up. In original condition the compass has fluidand appears to work fine. It has the oil burner lamp with reflector . - a very fine piece of military history.
This is solid brass and can be polished if desired. It current...ly has a high patina that comes with age. There is a sealed window between the oil burner lamp and the compass. The brass box is designed to keep out the sea water as is the burner area. There is also a carrying handle on the top. A board is mounted on the back of the case for mounting in a modern boat.
