"Born in Marblehead, he was the son of the late William and Mary Russell (Peach) Hawkes.
He attended Marblehead schools and was a graduate of Marblehead High School, Class of 1939. He later attended the Essex County Agricultural School and graduated in 1942.

He was a member of Company F, the 116th Regiment Combat Team and the 29th Division. He landed with the initial wave on Omaha Beach and went on through to France, the Netherlands and Germany with his unit. Mr. Hawkes was always proud to have served his country and was proud of his awards, which included the Combat Infantry Badge, four Battle Stars, the Bronze Arrowhead and the Purple Heart.
Following his return home in 1945, Mr. Hawkes had been employed as a driver for the Tower School for 23 years. He was a well-known craftsman cannon maker. Starting as a hobby, it became his main occupation for over 50 years. His mark, "WH, " is on more than 150 bronze naval guns of many sizes, including the large field piece owned by the Eastern Yacht Club.He was also a member of the VFW Post No. 2005 in Marblehead and the 29th Division Association."
Measurements: Approximately 14 1/4" tall (Bronze portion only), 21 7/8" (Bronze W/Handle), 2 3/8" wide. Bronze turret portion was 6" long, 3 3/4" wide. Wood base is 12 7/8" long, 4 3/8" wide, 3 1/8" tall.
Condition: Excellent vintage, pre-owed used as found condition. Signs of tarnish, could use a good polish, unknown if it is currently in functioning condition or not. The breech plug does unscrew with no trouble at all. The firing pin also functions as it should too. eBay limits sellers to only 12 photos and we're not able to capture every important detail.
