A Japanese Arita long dish, nagazara, decorated inunderglaze blue with contrasting diagonal fields divided by a zig-zag border.On one part an auspicious landscape combined with the Three Friends of Winterthe Pine, Plum and bamboo and in the other an octopus scroll, tako karakusa, ground. Such designs derive from so-called Kodaiji lacquer of the Momoyama erawhich often employed contrasting divisions based on the warabishi, pine barklozenge.The reverse is painted with auspicious ...tako-karakusa and hanamotifs, and a four character mark reading Fukichosun, connoting a wish for Goodfortune and long life. The dish measures 21cm in length, 4cms high and 11.5cmin width. It weighs 448 grams.The dish is in good condition other than a kiln flaw to thetop left hand corner edge with related stress crack and flaking (see images).
