Original Description:
Very Rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of Union Civil War Navy Sailor / Navy Tar Bernard Toby – a double amputee who lost both arms below the elbows in action during the Battle of Fort Fisher.
This heart wrenching yet fascinating Photograph measures approx. 3 1/2” by 2 1/8” and is mounted on its original, square corner, CDV Card Mount (card measures approx 4" by 2 3/8"). The double amputee stands to the right of a small cart flying an American f...lag, with a similarly uniformed young boy (Toby’s son) posed on the opposite side. The cart, which is actually a hand crank Street Organ, shows a marquis sign that reads in part, “Stanton’s Official Dispatch, ” and proclaims the victory at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher.
The verso of the CDV features printed text that reads "Glory to the Union! The Stars and Stripes Forever!" / "Stanton's Official Dispatch, Dated Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 1865. Troops arrive at Fort Fisher, Thursday, Jan. 12th; were landed Friday, Jan. 13; assault made Sunday, at 3 1/2 o'clock, P.M.; fight lasted seven hours; at 10 o'clock the Rebels were driven from the Fort, and at Midnight, Sunday, the Rebel Gen. Whiting surrendered to Terry. Explosion on Monday, Jan. 16th, between 6 and 7 o'clock, A.M. Bernard Toby." The back of the mount also carries the mark of the photographer - Fetter's New Photograph Gallery of Logansport, Ind.
Bernard Toby, a Dutch-born Crimean War veteran, moved to the United States with his wife in 1856, and enlisted in the US Navy after the Civil War broke out in 1861. Service in the war did not come without its personal tragedies, and Toby was no exception. On January 16, 1865 a powder magazine exploded while he was inside the surrendered Fort Fisher. Two hundred men were killed or wounded in the accident, including Toby, who lost both of his arms. Needing to make extra money, Toby thought of a creative way to make the most of his situation. He purchased a hand organ and used it to perform concerts around the country with his son. These events, along with photographs such as this one, provided additional income for his family. Throughout his performing career, Toby met President Andrew Johnson, Lt. Gen. U.S. Grant, and Adm. David Farragut. Research shows that Toby must have stopped touring and performing around 1869, perhaps in order to spend the rest of his time with his family. This CDV is a fascinating reminder of the cost of war, and a sailor who bore that cost with courage and ingenuity.
This rare and fascinating, Civil war Double Amputee, CDV Photograph is in excellent condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Photograph itself is clean and crisp as is the card mount.
