This is a really lovely pair of French silver gilt dinner knives with lovely, ornate, scrolling rococo handles.
The blades are stamped with the maker's mark PG inside a diamond, alongside the head of the goddess Minerva with a small number 2 before the chin, to confirm the silver is 800 standard. This mark was introduced in France in 1838. On the reverse side of Minerva is the bigorne stamp depicting an insect. This mark is not very clear, but I am pretty certain it shows the le...gs of an insect in profile, which would signify the knives were assayed in Paris.
Interestingly, the handles have a different maker, which is B over L in a diamond, alongside the head of Minerva.
Excellent antique condition, with just very minor scratches commensurate with age and a few tiny frits to the blades. The hallmarks are nice and clear. The gilding is worn in parts. Polish residue on the handles.
The knives weighs 83 g combined and are 199 mm long.
