Greetings. This is an old maternity figure sometimes called Jomooni or Gwandusu which was hand carved from one piece of wood by the Bamana tribal people of Mali, Africa. This Bamana statue was used in Jo initiation society ceremonies, fertility ceremonies and also in their shrines. This Bamana sculpture depicts a seated female mother figure clasping an infant to her torso and is called a Gwandusu figure. This old African statute measures 46 inches tall by 11 inches wide and weighs... 46 pounds.
