Black Sun Rise/Sun Set Motif Pottery by Marie & Santanaof San Ildefonso c.1943-1953 13.5" x 1.5"A beautiful and classic example of Maria Martinez decorated black potterySantana painted all of Maria's pots in this era --after the death of Maria's husband Julian and before Maria's son Popovi did the painting.Beautiful condition. Very minor scratches, no chips.Shown here is an excellent example of a large platter in beautiful condition. However this has b...een a VERY difficult item to photograph. Despite my best efforts I am not able to eliminate what appears to be 'light' colored areas on the platter. I can state unequivocally that the shiny black background on the platter is uniformly solid polished shiny black. The black on black design is somewhat matte in appearance. Please view photographs attached in listing for a visual representation of this item's condition. Maria Martinez pottery signatures varied over her career. After Julian passed away Maria continued to make pottery and it was then painted by her daughter-in-law Santana Roybal Martinez (1909-2002), mostly known simply as Santana, and then later by her son, Popovi Da (1923-1971). Maria was known to have signed "Maria" in combination with Santana between 1954-1956. Prior to that time she signed her name "Marie" when working with Santana (who executed the painting while Maria formed the pots).Purchased at auction in 1989.
