I originally purchased this piece from a friend in Denver, Colorado who imports art, textiles and architectural artifacts directly from Indonesia (Bali and Java) and India.
While Rangda can be seen as fearsome, she is also considered a protective force, warding off evil, in certain parts of Bali, much like Kali is seen as a benevolent mother goddess of fertility and destr...uction in Northeastern India in Assam, Tripura -- the mask of this ferocious mythological figure is revered in the village temples and dances as a patron and a protector against evil.
Rangda is a term in old Javanese that means "widow."
Very unique, colorful collection piece.
