Item:  Hopewell Culture:  Sun/Fertility Effigy Platform Pipe FindLocation: Portsmouth, OhioMaterial:   PotteryHeight:   2.8” (72 mm)Width:   2.0’ (52 mm)Depth:   2.3” 59 mm)Weight:    10.8 oz. (305 gr.)Provenance/HistoryAround1918, a farmer digging fence post-holes on his land about four miles north ofPortsmouth, Ohio, came across a trove of stone tools and several odd, bird-effigy platform pipes.  The bulk ofthis cache was legally acquired several years ago a well-known privatecollector.  Afew miles northwest of this find near Portsmouth, Ohio, is the Tremper Moundcomplex, which dates to around 100 BC. Turn of the century excavation there uncovered an astonishing number ofeffigy pipes.  {See details of the Mound Building Hopewell Culture below.}DetailsThispipe is of the platform variety and appears to be made from a very fine clayinto pottery.  The thick, curved base hasan effigy figure with two arms and an extended stomach.  This pipe may also signify the fertility or pregnancyof a tribal member.  The protruding“belly” area extends outwards making this a very rare and special effigy pipethat perhaps symbolizes the Sun giving birth to the Earth and all creatures onit.  Similar Hopewell effigy pipes havebeen recorded in this area and are thought to represent the Sun giving birth tothe Earth and all the creatures that inhabit it.Asmall reed, mouth hole (just .15” or 4 mm) in the platform connects to the deepsmoke hole that is about 2.0” deep x .75” in diameter.   The smoke rising from his large bowl wouldhave carried the prayers of the people to the Great Spirit in the Sky.Thepottery Sun Pipe has abrasions, smoke hole dings, ground scratches and minornicks.  It appears to have a seam that isvisible on the back side (see macro photo # 8) that indicates the flattened potterywas rolled in the round shape of this pipe. In all an extremely intriguing and RARE Sun/Fertility effigy platformpipe that is in museum quality condition. Hopewell Culture: Mound BuildersRef: Early SciotoCounty Native American History, 2016The area in Ohio were this pipe was found in the early 1900sis known today as the Portsmouth Earthworks were constructed by the Hopewell Culture(100 B.C to 500 A.D.) of prehistoric Native American people.  It is a large ceremonial center located at theconfluence of the Scioto and Ohio rivers. The first noted Native Americans in the Scioto County areawere the Mound Builders. Not the name of a tribe, but the term Mound Builder isused generally as referring to prehistoric inhabitants of North America whoconstructed various styles of earthen mounds for burial, residential andceremonial purposes. It is believed that the mounds were built between 500 B.C.to 1200 A.D.Although there is evidence of many Indian mounds in thearea, the most well-known is the horseshoe mound at Mound Park. Once known asthe Citadel, this is the only one of the four horseshoe mounds still inexistence. In 1876, the Scioto County Children’s Home was built on thepresent day mound at Mound Park, but it is again visible and preserved.  Sadly, the other horseshoe mound on GrantStreet was plowed over in 1888 for Highland School.  These horseshoe mounds are attributed to theHopewell Indians. The Hopewell culture is not the name of an American Indiantribe, but is the archaeological term that encompasses similarities in artifactstyle, architecture, and other cultural practices that distinguish the Hopewellculture from earlier and later cultures in the region. The Waller / Heinsich Mound is said to have been locatedacross from the library. The Lawson Mound was located near Mound Park, as theold Lawson farm was in that area. With the exception of Mound Park, the moundswithin the city are no longer visible. The Portsmouth Earthworks were constructed by the Hopewellculture (100 B.C to 500 A.D.) of prehistoric Native American people. It is alarge ceremonial center located at the confluence of the Scioto and Ohiorivers.Tremper Mound, which is located on U.S. Route 73 on the westside of Portsmouth, was excavated in July and August of 1915. Collections ofsixty of the effigy pipes created by the prehistoric Hopewell people wereunearthed and are now housed at the Ohio Historical Society. The Feurt Hill Mounds were located north of the city off U.SRoute 23. The Native Americans who constructed the Feurt Mounds, and lived inthe village site, belonged to the Fort Ancient Culture. The three mounds wereexcavated in 1916 by archaeologists who found 345 burials. The artifacts offlint, stone, bone, shell and pottery were typical of the culture.Fort Ancient is a name for a Native American culture thatthrived from 1000-1600 A.D. and predominantly inhabited land in the region ofSouthwestern Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Many Indian tribes passed through the Ohio Valley, includingthe Delaware, Mingo, Miami and Wyandot, but the Shawnee claimed this area astheir own, thus making pioneer settlements very difficult. After the Wyandots moved onward, the Shawnee Indians came tothe area around 1745. The Shawnee word “Scioto” was given to the river flowingwest of Portsmouth. They called the Ohio River, “Kiskepila Sepe”’, because of the eagles that nested along thebanks, and the Wyandots called it, “O-he-uh”. However, the river instead took anIroquoian word, “O-hee-yuh” meaning“good” or “beautiful” river.Tremper Mound, which is located on U.S. Route 73 on the westside of Portsmouth, was first excavated in July and August of 1915. Collectionsof sixty of the effigy pipes created by the prehistoric Hopewell people wereunearthed and are now housed at the Ohio Historical Society. This pipe would havebeen made, blessed, and used by what is collectively called the Hopewell Culture.
