This beaded work was made on a loom, then carefully sewn down to the leather-no messy glue here.
I work from many historic sources- magazines, photos, postcards and beading pattern books, including one by W. Ben Hunt and J.F. "Buck" Burshears. I've even been known to purchase beading patterns at Pow Wows. This breast collar's bead work was inspired by Native American Horse Tack regalia. But the pattern colors are my own design.
It's made with tiny size 15 seed beads, much smaller... than normal seed beads. This size gives me more freedom to make intricate designs, and looks better on Breyer and Peter Stone horses.
I first began working with beads to costume my Breyer horses when I was a teenager. Since then, people often ask me where I get the patience to work with such tiny beads. And I explain the time I once became so frustrated that I threw my beads up in the air. I had to buy new beads and my mother complained about spending days vacuuming beads up off of the rug. Now when I'm frustrated, I just set my work aside for awhile.
