Armando Jimenez is the grandson of the master woodcarver Manuel Jimenez, of Arrazola. Manuel Jimenez is generally acknowledged as the father of Oaxacan woodcarving tradition known as alebrijes, whose work who turn...ed the small farming village on the slopes of Monte Alban into a boom town. Although Oaxacan wood carvings have been around for less than 60 years, they have become one of the most popular folk art styles in Mexico. Manuel struggled out of poverty to become one of the world's most renown woodcarvers. Armando works with his wife Antonia Carrillo and their son. They carry on the tradition of naturalistic carving and colorful but restrained painting mastered by their grandfather.
