Original antique Chinese monks prayer beads necklace made of carved buffalo bones.Circa 1860s.Every bead is different as they were individually made by hand. They are lovely and glossy from years of wearing.The prayer beads necklace is an original. Even the worn tassel is original. It has never been restrung and has been like this for over 150 years.There are 108 beads including the half bead that is the base and the carved pendant.The number of 108 is significant in bud...dhism. The number apparently is reached by multiplying the senses smell, touch, taste, hearing, sight and consciousness by whether they are painful, pleasant or neutral and then again by whether these are internally generated or externally occurring, and yet again by past, present and future. Finally we get 108 feelings i.e. 6 x 3 x 2 x 3 = 108.I bought this fantastic prayer bead necklace in Beijing in the 1980s soon after the cultural revolution. During the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s religion was forbidden and deemed as feudal. Monks and nuns were driven out of temples and religious objects were burnt or throw away. This prayer bead necklace is in it's original condition. The yellow tassel was added later.Very rare.Length of the necklace : 119 cmThe battery is there for size comparison only.
