A large and very robust writers slope. A beautiful example from the Late Victorian era, and more or less the laptop computer of its day! This is an unusual example in a veneered mahogany (I believe but may be wrong) and with brass hardware including brass hinges and lock etc (sorry no key) What’s unusual however is what appears to have been an elaborate inlay of decorative brass in a loose organic scrolling pattern around the perimeter of the lid and front as well as a shield escutc...heon to front and lid. Just a small remnant of this brass remains to front right edge (see the pics) Missing also is the two halves of the wooden hinged slope with (usually leather or velvet) writing surface, each side of which would have lifted up to provide storage for papers envelopes and other necessities beneath. Parts of the upper pen tidy and ink well and etc are also missing as shown.. At top a lift out tray for pens etc and square recesses each side to hold the glass inkwells (One included)This example is in a dark solid rosewood (however I reserve the right to be wrong as timbers can be tricky to ID?)This example has the pared back austerity of the Georgian era- and likely dates ca1800- 1830 This example is therefore sold as a potential restoration project and the overall construction is in fine shape. Some timber veneer peeling in just a couple of places to the sides of the box.
