From a Green Valley, Arizona collector's estate:
Yaqui or Mayo Indian Pascola mask. Measures 7¾ inches high.
The Yaqui Indians live both in the Mexican state of Sonora and also in southern Arizona in several villages near Tucson and Phoenix.The Mayo people live in Sonora. Both tribes have very similar rituals and dances.
Masks such a...s this are used in many ceremonial dances held by the tribe. The most well known of these is the Yaqui Deer Dance. These masks are worn by paricipants called Pascola, dancers who serve as hosts and sometimes as clowns providing an unspoken commentary on the proceedings.
The hair is natural goat hair.
