LARGE GULLAH SWEETGRASS WOVEN BASKET WITH HANDLE AND ATTACHED LID
RECENTLY ACQUIRED FROM A LOCAL ESTATE, THIS AUCTION FEATURES VINTAGE GULLAH SWEETGRASS HANDLED BASKETTHIS BASKET STANDS 18" TALL FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP OF THE HANDLE AND 14" IN DIAMETER AT THE WIDEST POINT.Gullah basketmakers bundle dried sweetgrass and coil it into baskets held together by sewing the coils with thin strands of saw palmetto leaves. Dark reddish-brown bulrush and pine nee...dles are often interwoven with the light colored sweetgrass to add color and patterns as well as the added strength of the bulrush. Today, sweetgrass baskets have become a cherished and sought after Lowcountry art form with the majority of basketmakers centered in the Charleston/ Mt. Pleasant area of coastal South Carolina.THE OVERALL CONDITION OF THIS BASKET IS VERY GOOD. THE HINGE AND THE FRONT LOOP NEED REPAIR AS DO A FEW SECTIONS OF THE LID AND SOME SMALL SPOTS ON THE SIDES.
