An original autograph letter declining a Congressional trip to examine the defenses of Maine in the Civil War. The letter is dated East Saginaw, Michigan, August 4, 1864 and signed by JOHN DRIGGS  [1813-1877], who claims to be too busy raising a Regiment [29th Michigan Infantry] for the war. He was a Michigan politician and business man, and a member of Congress 1863 to 1869.
