RARE - Confederate Civil War Leech & Rigdon, “Memphis Novelty Works” Spur

This is another rare item being offered, it is a ConfederateWestern Theater spur manufactured by Leech & Rigdon of Memphis, Tennessee.These are sometimes referred to as "Memphis Novelty Works" spurs, asthat was the name of the manufacturing company owned by Leech & Rigdon atthe beginning of the Civil War. This cast brass spur has a rounded body and a squared offangled neck. The arms of this spur have a smooth transition into the strapplates. The strap plates have beveled openin...gs for the straps. It would havetaken a 1" iron rowel, which is long gone. While this spur does not havethe distinctive C S and stars markings of Leech & Rigdon, it is still a productof that firm. The book "Confederate, US and other Civil War UsedSpurs" by Bob Baird shows a good example of this type spur, shown asCS-24, on pages 61 and 62. Also, there is an example of this spur in “Civil WarRelics of the Western Campaigns 1861-1865”, by Charles Harris (see pictures). Years ago, someone marked "CS" in black paint on the inside. This spur is in very nice condition with a beautiful chocolate brown patina (no rowel). The body of the spur is straight, no twists or bends, also the neck is straight. This spur is just about impossible to find; you see the marked examples from time to time, but unmarked are quite rare. It comes in the glass-top display case pictured.
