With two post-war letters written to Gill's family after his death. (2) One dated 22 February 1912 from Gill's G.A.R. Post extending th...eir condolences. The Post is the Abel Smith 1st Long Island W.R. Corps. (3) The second letter is dated ten days prior, is headlined "Survivors Association First Long Island Regiment, 67th New York Volunteers, " and is a typed record of Gill's ranks and regiments. It is signed by Miles O'Reilly and has a clipped photo of O'Reilly from a newspaper.
Gill began the war as a Private in the 67th New York Infantry, served three years in that regiment attaining the rank of Sergeant when in the summer of 1864 he was among veterans who were consolidated into the 65th New York Infantry. At the end of the war he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 65th after serving for four years in the war.
The CDV has rounded corners and some staining (especially at bottom right and on the back), yet the image itself is very crisp. The hand-written letter is in very good condition with the writer's last name removed. The O'Reilly typed letter is in very good condition but the newspaper clipping has stained it at both sides of the middle fold.
