This is a very nice, original carte de visite photo of Captain Thomas G. Whytal, who was born in Nova Scotia, but worked as a merchant in Massachusetts. He enlisted in the 43rd Massachusetts Infantry on September 6, 1862, receiving his commission as Captain Co. D of the 43rd on September 12, in Readville, Mass. He was 37 years old. He served with the regiment in the Department of North Carolina, and West Virginia until it was mustered out on July 30, 1863, then transferred to the US Vo...lunteers Quartermaster Department, where he was breveted Major, and eventually Lt. Colonel, serving at that rank until October 5, 1867. A number of his letters are available through websites to which I do not subscribe, including Fold.
The image is in excellent condition, with very little yellowing, and only one corner stained. The corners are still sharp. There are some pencil marks on the back from a previous owner. I will include a print-out of Colonel Whytal's wartime service with the CDV.
