Draft Rendezvous, Albany, NYApril 17th 1864
Dear MotherI received your letter today and was glad to hear that you ...were all well and embrace this opportunity to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well. I have not much news to write. We have had very rainy weather but it is a fine day and the roads are getting dry. We have a good many recruits here now. I believe the draft has been postponed until the first of June. [Private} Sanford Sturtevant of the 142nd who is on duty here has gone on a visit to Ogdensburgh for five days. I have not heard from the Regt for a long time. I believe they are at Jacksonville Florida. I saw Jim Crookshank last week. There is no news from the Army. We have a good many deserters here, but we take good care of them. We lock them up in cells every night. I had a bad cold when I wrote to John, but soon got over it. If we stay here all summer I’ll go up to Lisbon and see you. I might go for a day or two, but I think I’ll wait till summer. This will be a pleasant place in the summer, I think. We have good beds and a good room and good food. Well I guess I’ll have to close for this time as I have no news. Give my love to all. Good bye.M. S. Chambers
