Hi folks, up for your bidding pleasure, this is a very rare, very large, original, authentic, and mint-condition "vet bring-back" map of post- World War Two occupied city of Berlin, published by the famous German Cartographer, Richard Schwarz in January 1946 (i.e., a mere 7 months after Berlin capitulated to the a...llies in May of 1945, the end of World War II).
As you probably already know, the city of Berlin was carved up by the victorious allies into "Zones of Occupation", and this map marks all of these Zones clearly and in color. The detail here is amazing, and diving into the map shows you all the famous names you have probably heard for years, for example, Tempelhoff Airport (occupied by Americans from 1945 to 1993, and where the famous "Candy Drops" were made); The Unter Den Linden boulevard (which was made into the last "airstrip" for high-ranking Nazis to fly in and out of Hitler's Bunker in tiny aircraft); the Northern Berlin suburb of Pankow (where Hitler's "Phantom Army" led by General Wenck was supposed to join the 9th Army and break through the Russian encirclement) etc.
The Cartographer Schwarz was making these identical maps during WWII for Germany, and interestingly, obviously, his production shifted immediately at the end of the war to producing maps for incoming allied soldiers, who needed such maps to get around the city and remain within their zones. It's an interesting footnote in history, as we know the Russians took (stole?) nearly every last piece of useful machinery back to Russia as war reparations and yet here we have Schwarz , obviously still in possession of at least some printing presses, and still making good maps of Berlin! Obviously the Allies thought it was important to continue making maps of Berlin, and let Schwarz keep his printing presses running!
As you can see in the photos, this is a rare, large size and impressive map with a scale of 1 : 25, 000. It is segmented into 21 cloth-backed panels (cloth was used to help keep the map sturdy and undamaged). The condition is virtually mint and un-used, with very little storage wear, if any at all. It was kept in the pictured brown paper bag by the family of the American Vet who brought it back home from duty in Berlin. I have had this map in my collection for many, many years, and during all this time have seen only one other immediate-Post WWII Berlin maps, and its asking price was much more than what I am asking for mine - the immediate Post war maps are just very rare, and there are very few around.
