WW1 Truppenlager Ohrdruf POW Prisoner Of War Camp French Muslim Zouaves Gotha RP
Item History & Price
Unposted, real photo WW1 postcard showing Zouaves, French North African Muslim prisoners of war with their guards at the German POW camp at Ohrdruf, in Gotha district, Thuringia, Germany. The caption in white ink at bottom right reads, "Zuaven im Truppenlager Ohrdruf". No. 73 in a series.
Fine animation with clear details of Zouave dress and of German regimental uniforms, equipment, and decorative pipe (Meerschaum?). There were nine light infantry regiments of Zouaves in the F...rench Army during WW1. They came mostly from Algeria.
The Germans used propaganda in an ill-fated attempt at Halbmondlager (Half Moon Camp) at Zossen to persuade French and British Indian Muslim POWs to become jihadists against the British and French Empires. This may also have been attempted at Ohrdruf camp, which had about 20, 000 prisoners. In WW2 it became a concentration camp.
