You are bidding on a WW2 German Metal ID Tag Wehrmacht Stalingrad Dig 1943 Heer 6th Army Original. Very cool complete WH Unused metal ID death tag German equipment with provenance to Volgograd/ Stalingrad directly from the excavator. Corrosion and rust from 75 years underground. Uncleaned and as found with battle damage.

This relic was un...derground for many years and retrieved from the vicinity of the battlefield at Stalingrad. The German 6th Army before being overrun after running out of food and supplies through January 1943. The Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943) was the largest confrontation of World War II, in which Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union (repelling the Enemy at the Gates) for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in Southern Russia.(Wikipedia)
Planes were desperately needed for the airlift to provide food and supplies, but often were not available or were damaged. By January 1943, soldiers had 200cal per day available to them, 1/10th that of what was needed. The Luftwaffe did famously bring them women's fur coats, medals by the cases and other useless nostrums....but few made it out.
Germany deployed assets away from the Western Front to support Stalingrad and the Eastern Front and to airlift into Stalingrad pocket. This was one of the major factors in Allied landing and moving forward. The loss of civilians, soldiers, material and culture was immense on both sides.
