Incunabula, Latin Bible Lf. Letter IIJohn - IIIJohn 1, Koberger, 1487
Item History & Price
Tuscany Book offersA splendid example of medieval printing, being a decorative leaf from a fragment of a Biblia Latina printed at Nuremberg, Germany by Anton Koberger in December of 1487.The Bible text is surrounded by the commentary of Nicolas de Lyra.Bibliographical references: Goff B-614, Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke, 4289, Undorf , 716.The literal meaning of the Latin word incunabulum is "infant’s cradle" and alludes to the fact that printing at that time was in its infancy. The fact that a book was printed before 1500 is significant in that its value is much greater than if it had been printed after 1501. Condition of the Leaf: As shown, in acceptable condition. It is on hand-made paper. Many leaves have an indistinct watermark. There is evidence of ageing: light soiling, edge and margin flaws, staining and spotting, etc. I will mention flaws that cannot be seen on the photographs. Size of the leaf: ca. 12.25"x 8.5"(310 mm x 215 mm). Pictured: Both sides of the leaf for sale and the colophon page giving the date of printing as 1487. The colophon leaf is not part of the lot. Please note: I never restore or treat my items with chemicals to enhance their appearance. Therefore, you can be confident that this item will not deteriorate beyond the natural aging process.
