About the Artwork
Johann Friedrich Anthing was a portrait artist who made a circuit of the courts o...f Europe, depicting royalty and other celebrities in silhouette. Featured in this piece is David Roentgen (second from the right), a popular cabinetmaker known for incorporating spring-activated secret drawers and other mechanical fittings into his work. He is being received by Catherine the Great’s private secretary, Strekaloff, while imperial cabinet registrar Stephan Fedorovitsch takes notes. Above are medallions of the empress, Grand Duke Paul and Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna.
