Hi! You're looking at my absolutely stunning brooch; known in it's native country Norway by its traditional name, solje. A solje is a traditional Norwegian brooch. Habitually made from silver, its dangling spoons once were thought to reflect evil away from the wearer, protecting against trolls and evil spirits, especially in times of transition. Customarily worn by brides and babies; but today with all its beauty, enjoyed by all. This solje is gilt metal, most likely silver gilt. ...It has superb enamel work which is in perfect condition. Although I can't find any marks, I believe this piece is by the esteemed Norwegian silversmith Marius Hammer. I'm unsure whether some of his pieces were unsigned or not, so I cannot be certain it is his work; but the style and quality certainly screams Marius Hammer. Please see photos for a description of the fabulous filigree and enamel decoration, it's so superb it has to be seen. The gilt to the back of the brooch is a little worn, commensurate with age, but this doesn't detract from this wonderful piece of jewellery. The enamel is perfect, the hinge and pin are in good working order. Length 7.2 cm OR 2.8 inches.Width 4.4 cm OR 1.7 inches.Depth 1.2 cm OR 0.5 inches.Diameter of largest circles 1.8 cm OR 0.7 inches.Diameter of smaller circles 1.0 cm OR 0.4 inches.Weight 11.53 grams.
