For sale here is a RARE COLLECTABLE ANTIQUE EDW. VOM HOFE MODEL RESTIGOUCHE 4 1/2" diameter, Patent Jan. 23, 1883 with a 1 12/16" width spool in excellent condition.. The reel carries the 1883 patent date on the oil cap, German safety bands and 6 roller bars. The reel has a strong adjustable drag with the seven dented arrowhead pointer with red dot indicators, the classic "S" shaped handle with counter weight, a SMOOTH foot (with minor curvature), in very fine overall condit...ion, while showing minor scratches indicative of its seniority (2020 minus 1883 = 137 years), and comes with the bag as seen in the photo. The reel is engraved in red with the initials: "H.L.R.E". whoever he/she was.The reel has some dings and scratches from, on and off, almost 137 years of fishing or on display.Genealogy of Edward vom Hofe: Edward vom Hofe (1846–1920) was a New York fishing equipment entrepreneur of the late 1800s. He introduced his first two fly reels, starting his own business in 1867. Vom Hofe had become famous for his precision salt-water big-game bait and casting reels constructed of nickel silver and hard rubber (ebonite), along with recently discovered metal named aluminum. Vom Hofe was a machinist, fishing-tackle builder and noted big-game angler who outfitted the famous anglers of his generation. The handmade fly reels, both named "The Edward vom Hofe Celebrated Trout and Bass Fly Reel", are still generally considered by anglers and collectors around the world as among the very best fly reels ever made.
