Used Vintage Town & Country Slim Zippo Excellent (EX+) condition with box from USS Triton (SSRN / SSN-586) Made in 1959 ( · · · ZIPPO® · · · ) Very... light surface scratches. Beautiful T&C design without painting lost. Ultra rare! In early 1960, it became the first vessel to execute a submerged circumnavigation of the Earth in Operation Sandblast. Triton accomplished this objective during her shakedown cruise while under the command of Captain Edward L. "Ned" Beach, Jr. She was the only member of her class and had the distinction of being the only Western submarine powered by two nuclear reactors. Triton's mission as a radar picket submarine was made obsolete after two years by the introduction of the carrier-based Grumman WF-2 Tracer airborne early warning aircraft. She was converted to an attack submarine in 1962 and became the flagship for the Commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (COMSUBLANT) in 1964. She was decommissioned in 1969, the first U.S. nuclear submarine to be taken out of service. Navy's Triton (SSRN-586) Undergoes Sea Trials. The nuclear powered radar picket submarine Triton undergoes preliminary acceptance trials in the North Atlantic. 1959. On 13 April 1964, Triton (SSN-586) became the flagship for the Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, and served in that role until relieved by submarine Ray (SSN-653) on 1 June 1967.
