I am putting this on eBay for my father, Bill Blauser, co-author of the book "Spring-Loaded Fish Hooks, Traps and Lures", who is paring down his collection……and so there will be others in the coming days, weeks and months. This is a scarce spring-loaded fish hook/trap patented in 1907 by Joseph Hartshorn of Des Moines, Iowa, and is the smallest of the 3 sizes made, measuring 3” in length in the sprung position. This hook is in EX condition and exhibit...s a bluish, “Color/Case Hardened” finish, which gives it an iridescent shimmer, and which resembles gasoline on water, and is quite beautiful. This hook (and 2 other identical ones) was found 25 years ago in this REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. mailing envelope. My dad says that it would make sense to him that the hooks were original to this envelope….and had come directly from the Remington Arms-UMC factory (which would explain the “Color/Case Hardening” which you often see on high-end Remington (and other) firearms)….but he has never been able to verify positively any other known connection between this spring-hook maker and The Remington Arms Co………..and so it can not be said for certain at this time that Remington was involved with this spring-hook..…..but if further research should corroborate a connection between the 2, then this could open up an entirely new field of collecting in regards to the early history of fishing in the United States and its connection to one of the premier firearm manufacturers in the US. As to the envelope itself…I have included a photo of the back of it that shows 2 sets of numbers written with an ink pen. One of these numbers is preceded by an “R” in script, which I have to believe refers to Remington….and so are these perhaps some sort of “internal” numbering and/or reference #s for Remington which if could be figured out would shed some light as to exactly what the original contents of this mailing envelope were?…and should it be that this hook was original to this envelope, (as I believe it is), then this would certainly be a GREAT addition to any collection of REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. items. My father says that he has always meant to write an article about this hook and envelope for his club’s magazines….but was never able to get around to it…..and so will have to be left to other and future collectors. This auction is for the 1 Hartshorn Spring-Hook shown, along with this original REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO. Envelope in which the hook was found. Even without the envelope, a Hartshorn Spring-Hook in this condition is highly sought after by collectors….and this is one that would never need to be upgraded. No reserve As to method of payment....my dad will take cash or a check (preferred).........or he can take Paypal.....but he has no way of taking a credit card...as he is not a business, but rather just a private individual.
Be sure to look at my other auctions for other pieces of his collection.
