A Dazzling & Rare Antique 19th Cent. Uzbek Silk Gold Brocade Chapan / Robe
DESCRIPTION: This rare Uzbek robe / chapan dates to ...the 3rd quarter of 19th century and is attributed to the kingdom of Bukhara (modern day Uzbekistan). It was made for a young bride and considering it has no lining, it was probably a summer coat. It is tailored from Russian gold brocade silk fabric; these expensive fabrics were imported to the region during the second half of 19th Century. Often garments made of these fabrics were for aristocratic or noble families. The design is fantastic and was aligned for the taste of the region. It came from an old collection from the 1970's. It is a highly collectible and rare textile art worthy of any collection and can be worn.
HISTORY: During the 19th Century, Central Asia had a very rich tradition of lavish silk textiles. Being at the heart of the silk road, the region became extremely rich, leading to a boom in demand and production of luxurious traditional silk garments, hangings and embroideries, both in rural and urban areas. By the second half of the 19th century the wealth grew so much that lavish textiles were even being imported from neighbouring regions, including Russia, Persia, India and China. This robe is made of Russian imported brocade silk fabrics but tailored in Bukhara. These were popular amongst the nobles and aristocrats.
However after the Soviet invasion of Central Asia during the 1920's, the geo-political changes resulted in the gradual death of the rich silk textile tradition. Over the past 50 years, antique and vintage silk textiles Central Asia have captured the imagination of collectors, museums and aficionados all over the world. Since only few have survived, they have become increasingly sought after and valuable in the current market.
CONDITION: The overall condition of the robe is in good antique state, with the brocade relative in tact. There are a few possibly water stains near armpits and back (as seen on photos). They can probably be cleaned. This piece was from an old collection and was boxed for over a decade.
