Up for sale is an antique Collins"Legitimus" 3-1/4 lbs single bit axe. This axe is a Dayton style axe that features a single flared bit, thick cheeks, and a heavy pole for added swing weight. In a 3 lb+ size, this style is particularly good as a chopping and splitting axe for both soft and hard woods. This tool has been fully restored, and is made from an original antique tool head that has been hand-fitted and hand-hung... on a brand new handle. The Collins Company was an axeand tool manufacturer located in Collinsville, CT that in its original form operated from the 1840s through the the 1960s, and was one of the leading domestic American axe manufacturers for the entirety of this time. The"Legitimus" line of tools was one of the flagship, top tier brands of the company, and became synonymous with Collins tools. Based on the stampings present on the axe, this particular Legitimus is known as an "export axe, " and was specifically manufactured for the oversees markets that the company worked to open up in Australia, South America, and Europe between the 1930s-1950s. This is based on the fact that it is stamped "Hartford, CT" instead of "Collinsville, CT". It was thought that using Hartford would be a more recognizable location to foreign buyers than Collinsville. This axe is the perfect tool for someone looking for a high quality axe that also has some old-world character. Axe details are as follows: 3-1/4 lbs Dayton style axe head stamped "U.S.A [Collins & Co] Hartford/[Cast Steel] Warranted/Legitimus. The "Collins & Co" and "Cast Steel" stamps are just barely visible (see pictures) Brand new 32" handle treated with protective layer of boiled linseed oil. Handle is a premium, perfect grain handle (see picture). Total length of axe head is 7" long Bit length is 4-1/2" Pole is 3" long and 1" thickThe tool steel of the head is currently protected with a light coat of boiled linseed oil to prevent rusting prior to use. The bit is in excellent shape, with a great profile, fairly sharp hone, and very strong temper line. There is one very small chip in the top of the bit, and could stand to be further refined and sharpened though(see picture). There is some slight mushrooming of the pole, but no cracking or splitting has been created (see picture). On both cheeks and the pole, there are deep gouges into the steel from previous use, but none of these are on the bit, and should not impact the use of the axe at all. The head has been hand fitted with spoke shave/draw knife and tightly hand hung with wooden wedge. The tool is free of rust and serious damage. There are signs of age/use, and moderate pitting in some areas, but no damage that would render the axe unusable. This axe has been brought back to great shape, and if treated well, will have many more years of heavy duty work left.
