Record Grading All Grading is visual and ScrupulousDefinition 2: (Punctiliously exact) (Some Grading might include audio testedinformation as well, but only if stated in individual descriptions.) Sealed/New This is not one of my Gradings. Record is still sealed, New, and has never been played. If it shows damaged corners or something like that, I will grade it or mention it in the description. NM (Near Mint) Like New. Upon inspection, the record does not appear to have any visible light scratches or damage of any kind. If there is a noticeable dust or a fingerprint on it, I will usually say it in the description or demote the grading. Expensive records are more detailed in description. Several specks of dust or a fraction of a fingerprint are not usually mentioned for records under 20 dollars. Too much dust or fingerprint brings it to VG+ or maybe VG++ VG+ (Very Good Plus) The record has little visible signs of being used. 1 or 2 very light scuffs or 1 small (1” or less) not very deep scratch maybe a 3 inch, very light scratch. The label is surely flawless. VG+ is almost flawless. I will even add a (+) and make it VG++ if there is only small light blemish. Excessive fingerprints, evaporated water or cleaning solution or dust might demote it to VG+ from NM. Sound quality is perfect or close to perfect on 95% of the record (if a 1-inch semi-deep scratch is perpendicular to the grooves it may slightly affect up to approx. 5% of the recorded material). VG (Very Good) There are some light scuffs and/or scratches or even one single bad scratch could bring the record down to VG or even down to VG-. Here, VG may have several scratches and or scuff marks and these are defects that may influence sound to some extent, but surely, not even noticeable to an average casual listener. If a scratch or two looks too ominous, I will mention its extent or demote the grading. The label may have discolorations or ring wear. VG- (Very Good Minus) There are more scuffs or scratches but not so many or so bad as to make a needle skip or jump. Most likely has distortions in sound that include a pop, a hiss and/or a crackle, but still very enjoyable without distortions that would ever furrow the brow of party going kith and kinfolk. The label may have discolorations or ring wear. G+ (Good Plus) This is the other side of the hill on my scale of 1-8 options. There is no middle option. Got 4 Grades on top and 4 on bottom. The problems are a batch of 2 or 2.5 of these 4 problems but NOT all 4… Several deeper scratches, noticeable scuff marks, numerous lighter scratches and/or numerous lighter scuff marks. There is a very slight possibility of a needle jump or skip but most likely only scattered moments of hiss, crackle and pop that may begin to distract even a casual listener. The label might have discolorations or ring wear. G (Good) This is a score of 3 out of 8 and is fast approaching the level that only collectors would want to listen to in order to feel they have time traveled on the rarest of vibrations for a workable price. The Scratches and/or scuff marks are deeper and/or more numerous. Slight possibility of a needle jump or skip but most likely just very noticeable hisses, crackles and/or pops. The label may have discolorations or ring wear. G- (Good Minus) Might want to get a separate needle for records of this grading. Most of the songs are probably still playable with a spare needle, but up to about 49% of the recording will only be good for historical and social research or fuzzy distorted time traveling, listen at your own risk. Poor Many scratches and scuff marks or might only have a chip or crack in it. With a chip or a crack, some songs might still play with minimal distortion or very clearly. Check description for details. One might want to get a separate needle for records of this grading. Good for making art or keeping as a rare piece of history. Might be warped, melted, covered in soda or otherwise useless. Cover grading Sealed/New This is not really one of my Gradings. Just a statement that the record is still sealed, New, and has never been played. If it shows damaged corners or something like that, I will grade it or mention it in the description NM (Near Mint) Like new. Upon inspection, the cover does not have any damage and appears to be in perfect shape. VG+ (Very Good Plus) The Cover may have a small crease or a cut or a discolored spot or light ring wear or light shelf wear or a bumped corner or a sticker of ownership or pen ink or tanning on the edge or a combination of a couple or up to 3 of these minor blemishes. VG (Very Good) There are no tears on the edges and seems and the spine is intact. The Cover may have a minor crease or abrasion or discolored area or light ring wear or light shelf wear or a sticker or some writing or an abrasion or bumped corners or ring wear or shelf ware or a combination of up to several of these blemishes. VG- (Very Good Minus) If there are any tears on the spine or the edges and seems they are small. Spine may be frayed and paper (Not the Board) may be damaged, Less than an inch. The Cover may be dusty or have slight water damages. The Cover may have a noticeable crease or abrasion or discolored area or bumped corners or ring wear or shelf ware or tape or a combination of up to several of these blemishes. G+ (Good Plus) This is the other side of the hill on my scale of 1-8 options. There is no middle option. Got 4 on top and 4 on the bottom. The Cover may be torn at edges or spine might be damaged. Cover may be dirty or have water damages or noticeable creases or abrasions or discolored areas or bumped corners or ring wear or shelf ware or taped or torn seems or a combination of up these types of damage. G (Good) As, with most grading systems for records, Good is not so good. It is worse than the above. Here it is a 3 out of 8 G- (Good-) 2 out of 8, Cover may be simply detached at edges or seems and otherwise looks ok or just looks bad. Poor Terrible condition, Might be ok for holding a cheap record or a nice record with a little plastic and tape
