This is a rare marked miner's candle from the gold rush days of MARIPOSA in California and is fresh to market here for you from a collection of early antique lighting items we recently acquired. These candles are a special wax blend made for the mining industry and were used in sticking tommy and other old lighting devices that were specially made for mining underground and the elements found there back in the day before carbide lamps became the tool of choice for most mining operation...s.
As you know these old original stamped candles are VERY rare to find in good shape and unused. We were lucky to find a few from this particular estate and we have this one left so if you need one this is the last one we have to offer of these.
This listing is for this ONE candle and you will receive the exact candle here in the pics. The pic that shows them all together is for display so check it out too but again the candle you are getting in this listing is the one shown in the pics.
This measures about 7 inches long and as you can see it is not perfect since it is an old original. It has been stored over the years and is no longer perfectly straight but that is usually expected for an item made of wax as old as this candle is. It has darkened with age due to the wax content but that also proves it's authenticity. Overall it is still in good shape for a candle of this era with no breaks or cracks unless specified in the pic details.
If you don't know much about the gold rush days in California definitely take some time to study up on some of that as it is an interesting time period in the history of mining here in the USA. Mariposa was a prime location and is close to Yosemite and is also a wonderful area to visit if you ever get the opportunity. We love that area and always find wonderful antiques when we venture out that way. :)
