Rare 1857 Tax Receipt for John Phillips [possibly a banker] in Charleston, South Carolina. Dim: 4 3/4" x 5" It is signed by H.L. Pinckney [ Henry Laurens Pinckney (1794-1863)- father Charles Pinckney ( 1757-1824) was a Signer of the Constitution, US Senator and Governor of South Carolina; his grandfather Henry Laurens was 5th president of the Continental Congress. He graduated from South Carolina College in 1812 and studied law with his brother-in-law Robert Y. Hayne, US Se...nator and Charleston Mayor. HL Pinckney served in the South Carolina House of Representatives, 1816-1828; 1830-1833 ; some terms as Speaker; US House of Representatives 1833-1837; Mayor of Charleston 1837-1840 and previously as Intendent on several occasions He served as Collector of the Port of Charleston 1841-1842 and tax collector of St. Philip's and St. Michael's Parishes [Charleston] 1845-1863 [Time of document] He was also the founder of the Charleston Mercury newspaper in 1819 and editor 1829-1840 Cannot find an example of his signature.
