Upon cleaning off the mud I reali...zed it was a hatchet. Later at home I tossed it in the dishwasher for an extremely hot washing! It came out so much better. Honestly though, Ive cleaned it Extensively with 3 different Emery cloth's by hand and this is as far as Ive got! Ive watched with a carefull eye for words, raised or stamped. Nadda.
The head is 4- 1/4" long. Its 2-3/16" wide at the cutting edge. It has a couple miniscule nics on the edge but not serious. The 8- Sided Hammer head is only 3/4" wide accross all the flats. The oval handle hole is 13/16" x 5/16". There was a rotted mass of "Handle Stump" in the hole. Ive since punched it out.
Now the woods I found it in back in the day was all pasture land. So It could have fallen from anyone's belt since 1792. Maybe from a stranger in 1940!!....Hard telling. All depends on how old it is etc.
Its only 6-ounces in weight. I doubt its a toy. The other thing It could be is, I am only a 7 hour drive from Oak Island Nova Scotia Canada. COULD IT BE a Hatchet from the first settlers on Oak Island?
Ill leave it up to you who made it and how old it is.
Naked its 6- ounces. Packed in a first class antelope is 8-ounces.
Thanks and ask questions!
