[APH]CONCEPT V.3 #1 Larry Ivie fanzine Aug. 1958Thisis an auction of very small print-run science fiction fanzines. This particularauction includes Volume 3, issue #1 (apparently Whole Number 5) of CONCEPT, a general-interest fanzine published by Larry Ivie (1936-2014), published out of West 23rd Street in New York City. Larry Ivie wasone of the first “big names” in comic book fandom, and he would go on the workprofessionally in comics as both a writer and an illustrator. He was bo...rn inSalt Lake City to Wilton and Aileen Ivie, the former employed as a biologist, but moved to New York City in his tens to attend the School of Visual Arts. Therehe began a lifelong association with New York Fandom—he was a member of theFanoclasts and a regular reader and contributor to various fanzines. He beganwith several contributions of CASTLE OF FANKENSTEIN, then produced sevenissues of his own semi-pro magazine HEROES AND MONSTERS. As a professionalillustrator, he appeared in magazines including GALAXY and IF, and collaborated on comics including T, H, U, N, D, E, R, Agents and wrotestories for Creepy and Eerie.Volume3, Number 1 is dated August, 1958. Paul Davis, John Bensonand Ronald Parker are listed as co-ieditors or staff. Contents include:“Oddsand Ends, ” Larry Ivie’s editorial“Civilization, ”fiction by Larry Ivie“TheAndalogent Generation, ” an article by Paul Davis“RayBradbury and EC” by John Benson“TheOld Witch: A Special Issue, ” an editorial persona borrowed from FC comics“BackInto Time, ” a conversation between Ivie, Ron Parker and “Meyers.”“AFew Thoughts on Mankind” by Larry Ivie“Conceptsin Sound” an editorial by Ivie, partially concerned with contributyr PaulDavis.Reproducedby mimeograph, 26 pages and in good condition, with some minor tears on thelast sheet.Thisfanzine is from the collection of the Hugo-winning fan- and comic-artist SteveStiles, who has contributed to several hundred fanzines in a career that spanswell over 50 years.
