This is the Keystone View Company, Manufactures and Publishers card "# 2389, Boardinghouse Musician." The Keystone company was located in Meadville, Pa., and St. Louis, Mo. The copyright is dated 1897 and the photograph was copyrighted by B.I Singley -- then President of the company and photographer.
This photo shows a man dressed in sailor's clothes sitting in the parlor of a boardinghouse, playing the 5-st...ring banjo. It is a comic scene since the child in front of the sailor is about to attack the banjo; the man to the boy's right is holding his ears since the music evidently distresses him; the man to his right is pointing at the child as if admonishing him not to attack, and to the right behind the sailor is a woman holding an infant. Behind the sailor on the wall is a mourning wreath, ostensibly for the man whose picture is in the photo above it.
To the analytic minded, the picture says that banjo playing was not the most celebrated genre for the parlor -- (it is also interesting that the banjo the sailor is playing is a fairly expensive one - see the numerous hold-down clamps surrounding the banjo head). Singing beneath a sign of mourning was hardly good manners at the time to say nothing of the unattended child about to interact with the instrument.
This is an interesting stereo card that is in fairly good shape. It has a sepia hue. It is standard size and there is nothing printed on the back so we have not photographed that.
