PRESIDENT JAMES K. POLK - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 08/22/1841 - HFSID 286034

SIX DAYS AFTER PRESIDENT TYLER VETOED CLAY'S BANK BILL, BUT BEFORE THE TENNESSEE GOVERNOR LEARNS OF THE VETO, POLK WRITES FROM NASHVILLE: "WE HAVE NO VETO OF THE BANK BILL YET. LETTERS FROM WASHINGTON OF THE 12TH - SPEAK IN CONFIDENT TERMS THAT THERE WILL BE A VETO".
 ...
JAMES K. POLK. Political Content ALS: "James K. Polk" as Governor of Tennessee, 1¼p, 7¾x9¾, front and verso. Nashville, Tennessee, 1841 August 22. To Robert B. Reynolds, Esqr., Knoxville, Tennessee. In full: "Since I wrote to you a few days ago, concerning the Judgeship vice Judge Powell deceased I have examined the laws & find that any one of the Circuit Judges of the State are authorized to hold the Courts in his Circuit. - I have written to Judge Robert M. Anderson requesting him to hold the Courts in Hawking on the 4th Monday in Sep'r and in Greene on the 2nd Monday in October. This will give the Legislature full time to elect a Judge, before any other Court in the Circuit will come on. I am anxious that Judge Anderson shall hold the Courts in Hawkins & Greene. If he declines I will be compelled to make a temporary appointment, and in that event I fear I will find some difficulty in making a selection of a suitable person, & especially if it is deemed to be important that he should reside within the Circuit. - I think it probable too - that any member of the bar who is qualified - might be unwilling to accept the appointment, for so short a period before the Legislature convening. - If you see Judge Anderson - perhaps - you can have some influence in inducing him to hold the two Courts in Hawkins & Greene. - We have no veto of the Bank Bill yet. Letters from Washington of the 12th - speak in confident terms that there will be a veto; We will probably know by to night's mail." There was a veto. On August 16, 1841, President JOHN TYLER, who took office upon the death of Whig President W.H. Harrison in 1841, vetoed Whig HENRY CLAY's bank bill to establish a national bank with branches in several states. A similar bank bill passed by Congress on states' rights grounds on September 9th was also vetoed by Tyler. His actions resulted in the resignation, on September 9th, of all of his Cabinet members except for Secretary of State Daniel Webster, who remained to settle a dispute with Great Britain involving the Maine-Canada boundary. Democrat JAMES KNOX POLK was Governor of Tennessee from 1839-1841. He lost reelection bids in 1841 and 1843. In 1844, Polk defeated Whig Henry Clay and was elected 11th U.S. President. While in office, he suffered from recurring attacks of cholera and continual work, including conducting the Mexican War and securing the territories of Oregon and Washington. Polk was exhausted after his four years in office and did not seek renomination in 1848. On June 15, 1849, just three and a half months after leaving the White House, Polk died. At 53, he is the youngest U.S. President to die of natural causes. Anything bearing Polk's signature is scarce and handwritten letters with political content are rare. Fragile. Folds, vertical fold touches "J" in James. Folds show some separations, neatly repaired with clear glue on blank verso. ¾-inch vertical separation at upper blank margin. ¾-inch horizontal separation at right (all paper intact). Nick at left edge. Ink smudge at salutation. Ink show through. Overall, fine appearance.
