MAY 22, 1851 JAMES BUCHANAN AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, RE PENNSYLVANIA POLITICS
Item History & Price
"If you had not informed me that your brother's intention(?) in office would defeat Col. Bailey's application, I should, with all my heart, have written to W. Banks as you desire. But I have pledged myself to our York friends to Col. Bailey to exert any influence which I would hope to gain him a place & I must redeem this pledge or forfeit my word. Now it seems from your letter that the interest of your brother is in direct conflict with that of Col. Bailey & that if I should succeed in having him retained I should defeat the man whom I have recommended." (The question mark is mine, not sure of that word)
Buchanan (Dem.) was inaugurated as President Mar. 4, 1857
The letter is matted and framed and most probably attached to the mat with masking tape around the letter. This can easily be shipped without the frame.
