ERNEST B. "MONTE" SCHOEDSACKALS to film historian George Turner. Schoedsack's signature is rare in any form, but its association with King Kong and Fay Wray in this letter make it remarkably important and desirable!Autograph Letter signed: "Monte", 1 page, 8&#...189;x11. Santa Monica, California, 1969 October 2. On personal letterhead to "Dear George" [Turner]. In full: "I've had your tape for some time but haven't had anything new to your book. But now that the damn summer weather has moderated, I'm fully involved in a big new project which will get the [?] rid of the [?] and a couple of ugly boxes off the floor. Then I will [illegible phrase] and start the project up again. Meanwhile, did you see Fay Wray's big spread on Kong in the N. Y. Times of Sunday, September 24? If not, let me know and I'll send you a copy." Top left corner creased. 2 horizontal fold creases. Fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope (9½x4), addressed in signer's hand to George Turner, Amarillot Texas. Ernest Beaumont "Monte" Schoedsack (1893-1979) got his first film job with Keystone in 1914. A Signal Corps cameraman during World War I, Schoedsack stayed in Europe after the war to help with famine relief, and met Merian Cooper, who would be his collaborator on many films. After making several documentaries, Schoedsack and Cooper began co-directing films starring Fay Wray: The Four Feathers (1929), The Most Dangerous Game (1932), and most famously King Kong (1933). Schoedsack's wife, Betty Rose, was a scriptwriter on Kong. Later films directed by Schoedsack (still collaborating with Cooper) included The Last Days of Pompeii (1935) and Mighty Joe Young (1949). He created the prologue to This is Cinerama (1952). Schoedsack was very publicity shy, and with eyesight seriously damaged in World War II, he preferred to correspond by tape. Hence, his signature is very rare. Film historian George Turner, author of The Making of King Kong and recipient of this letter, was one of the few persons in whom Schoedsack worked closely. Schoedsack appears as a hero in Greg Bear's science fiction novel Dinosaur Summer (1998). Toned and creased. Sealed. Fine condition.
