An Archaic Antique Uzbek Silk/Cotton Embroidered Suzani circa 1900.
DESCRIPTION: This rare antique Uzbek silk/cotton embroidery is known as s...uzani / susani and dates to the early 1900's. It is a bridal dowry embroidery made in the rural areas of Shahrisabz. It is intricately chain-stitched embroidery with floral field design scattered around a central medallion. The colours are beautiful with an archaic feel to the design. The beautiful Russian cotton lining is typical of the period. It came from an old collection from the 1970's. It is a highly collectible and rare textile art worthy of any collection and would look great as a wall hanging or a bed cover.
HISTORY: Being at the heart of the ancient silk route, the people of Central Asia produced some of the most beautiful silk textiles in history. During the economic boom of the 19th Century, the region became extremely wealthy and their demand for luxury helped develop a very rich silk textile tradition. One of the most coveted of all their textiles were their dowry embroideries known as Suzani / Susani. They were made by the bride for her wedding gift and was her most prized possession. The suzani tradition existed in both rural and urban areas. The rural Shahrisabz suzanis were often chain-stitched on coloured ground fabric such as this example. They are often mis-attributed to the Uzbek Lakai tribe and in some circles Lakai has become the generic term for them. Over the past 50 years, the few surviving antique suzani embroideries have captured the imagination of collectors, museums and aficionados all over the world. Their intricate stitching and floral designs have struck a chord with the collectible market and demand increasing prices..
CONDITION: In good overall antique condition. It has natural age patina with a few slight slits and spots to the ground fabric as seen on photos. But none of this distracts.
