After conducting some research on The Hockenberger, a cigar and wine saloon, I believe this beautiful piece was made between 1901-1903. I reached out to a museum in Toledo, Ohio which found some information on the establishment and was able to provide me with the following:
"Toledo city directories list The Hockenberger at 241 Summit St. with proprieto...r Jacob Gerold in 1901, 1902 & 1903. The 1900 Toledo city directory lists the Hockenberger at 241 Summit with proprietor Henry Fetter. Also, there are earlier and later Hockenberger saloons from 1892-1893 proprietor Jacob Hockenberger at 241 Summit; and Rudolph P. Hockenberger had a saloon from 1904 -1910, but at a different location. Unfortunately, we don't have any photos of that area around that time period."
I believe this match safe is wrapped in celluloid. There is a functional cigar or cigarette cutter on the bottom. The top and cutter both open and close smoothly. The small amount of yellow staining or ? on the front of the match safe is exaggerated by the large size of the photos. It is much less obvious in person.
The fine print on the side, under “Toledo Brewing & Malting Co’s Beer, ” reads “The Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark N.J.” The Whitehead & Hoag Company is well known by collectors for making some of the most beautiful novelty items, buttons and pinbacks from the 1890’s.
This is a very nice match safe collectors. Thank you.
