Original Description:
Greetings!  Here is a scarce antique Yankee Bicycle Watch/pocket from the mid+ 1890s bicycle-boom era! This watch is 100% original and running. ..just a little tlc is needed. Looks like a possible military-scribe inside of back case!!==CASE== Inside of back case appears to be lightly scribed >>L.C. Belthune?, 77th(or 17th) North". A couple more angles of the scribing can be sent in photos if you message me. The Spanish-American war was going on around the time this watch was... produced. This being a bicycle watch it may have been carried by a military bicycle soldier? Who knows. I do have to mention that i purchased this watch in the U.K., so that is the recent provenance before my ownership.Stamped brass that is nickel=plated. Brass showing around front edges and back edge. Dimpled/dented/scratched/undulated on back. Hinge is great. Bow does not hold position but is undamaged. This watch has the original early celluloid crystal that shows light scratches but is toned and reasonable clear. It has probably shrunken a bit and possible was stored for decades face-down, and the apex has been flattened. This may be the reason the crystal contacts the hands/pinion and keeps the time from advancing when the case is completely closed. There is a circle-impression that is evidence on the inside of celluloid. The movement is very tight-fitting when fitting past the hinge and top. When maneuvered it will allow movement to be flush to front flange and case to be closed tightly. The movement was intended to be screwed to case just below the crystal. Screws are missing, so movement is free to be removed. If you are familiar with this watch design, this will make sense. Case measures a lofty 28MM thick, 58MM in diameter without bow, and with bow top2bottom is 86MM! Wowza. Is that a Yankee in your pocket, or are your really glad to see me!?==DIAL== is the original cardboard/paper, does show much toning. May have been coated with a shellac very early on. The center of dial shows some micro-cracking. This shows character and time-passed!All hands present and look fine. The metal dial has tabs that affix it to movement, and these are loose, thus the dial that houses the paper is loose from movement.==MOVEMENT== is running fine and will run a full-wind. I've witnessed many wind-cycles. Keeps "OK"-time when not sandwiched in case. Will need service for consistency and accuracy. Sometimes needs a twist of case to get balance started when mainspring is depleted. This is basically a small clock. The hands being pressed against the crystal and the setting dial pressing against the inside back-case(impression/see photo) keeps this from showing accurate time when completely closed. As mentioned, a tight/sandwiched fit so the fitment will have to be tweaked to get this watch correctly performing 100%.==SUMMARY== an uncommon Yankee Bicycle Watch, 100% original and running, ready for a discriminating pocket watch collection or antique bicycle collector from the Wheelmen/LAW-era.
