Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:27199375 |
Exceptionally rare and original, ca1888 W. S. Kimball & Co. Tobacco Card Album featuring Ancient Coins of the World. This Album (designated as Tobacco Album A39 in the American Card Catalog) is titled "Album of Ancient Coins" and featuring images from all 50 of the Tobacco Cards from the N180 series known by the same name. The pages feature embossed images of the coins printed using metallic gold, silver and bronze inks.
...; This is the among rarest, 19th century Tobacco Card Albums and measures approx. 4 3/8" by 7" and contains 12 leaves plus the front cover printed on a medium weight, card stock with the edges shape cut. Each interior page is printed on one side only. (There is no rear cover) Each page features the same images printed on the individual Tobacco Cards of the N180 Set but without the card border.
The Chromolithography is of the VERY highest quality and both the individual Tobacco Cards and this Album were lithographed by Julius Bien & Co. although the Album does not carry the lithographer’s mark.
Premium Albums of this type are much rarer than the individual Tobacco Cards and were available from the Tobacco Company issuing the Cards (in this case Wm. S. Kimball & Co.) for a set price or in exchange for coupons issued with the same packs of cigarettes that contained the individual Cards. While the Tobacco Cards were free in packs of Cigarettes or Tobacco these Albums had to be purchased (or stamps had to be sent in for postage charges) and because of this the Albums are now much rarer and highly desirable.
This exceptionally rare and original, ca1888 Wm. S. Kimball Tobacco Company, Chromolithographed, Tobacco Card Premium Album is in very good condition. The Album is complete including its original stiff wrappers and all pages are present. The interior pages are in excellent condition – clean and crisp and very well preserved. The original rope binding is still intact with a tiny paper tear near the rope joint and a small tear at the bottom center of the cover. (See Photos) An exceptionally rare and original, ca1888 W. S.
