18TH C ANTIQUE ENGLISH HINGED PEWTER SNUFF BOX, W/EAGLES/ROSES & CLASSICAL URN
Item History & Price
DIMENSIONS: 3 ½" Width x 2 ¼" Depth x ¾ Height
DESCRIPTION: For sale is this handsome, recently found, unmarked mid to late 18th century antique English pewter snuff box with decorated, hinged lid, featuring ...bas-relief, raised graphic iconography of two eagles with their wings spread, a central classical urn containing roses and intricate Old English scroll design. The snuff box is a wonderful example of early tobaccianna, no doubt brought to the New World and nascent British colonies in the Americas by a British soldier or purchased by an American Colonialist of note and of economic means. It opens and closes freely and the hinge mechanism and wire are operational and intact. The front of the lid has a slightly projecting forward finger grasp meant to allow the user to catch the edge of the lid sufficiently, allowing them to open it to retrieve the tobacco elements inside. The sides, back and bottom of the snuff box are without decoration. Regal elegance is afoot with this really lovely mid-late 18th century English pewter snuff box with decorated lid. Imagine, it's 250-270 years old and counting. Wow!
CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
