For sale we have this breathtaking antique Islamic Damascus box, dating from circa early 1900s - circa 1920. This magnificent Mamluk revival box is made from brass which has been inlaid with silver and copper. It is a very heavy and good quality example. The inside of the box has been completed with stunning marquetry work including the use o...f mother of pearl.
The lid of the box has been beautifully inlaid with silver and copper. There is some calligraphic Arabic script in the centre which has been inlaid in silver surrounded by beautifully flowing foliage. There is also copper inlaid work to complement and highlight it. Further floral work around the edges of the lid too.
The four sides of the box have been inlaid with stunning Thuluth Arabic script. This box has been completed in the typical Mamluk style, so there Arabic script praises the Sultan etc.
One one side it translates to: "Glory to our lord the Sultan" The second side reads: "The King, the victorious of the state. Another side reads: "Victorious of the religion". I am not sure what the final side reads.
These line are typical of Mamluk metals which praised their Sultan.
The inside of the box has been completed with beautiful marquetry including the use of the mother of pearl. It is the original Damascus work from the early 1900's. It has been completed on the base as well as the four sides of the inside of the box too. The important thing to note is that it is in fantastic condition. Normally over the years there will be some damage with some missing pieces, however the marquetry work inside this box is in fantastic condition with no loss or damage.
This is a fantastic item - very elegant and extremely decorative. A truly beautiful Mamluk revival Damascus work of art!
