Early American History of P. Lorillard Tobacco CompanyLimited Edition Commemorative Plate
You are bidding on a unique piece of American History commemorating America's first tobacco company Lorillard founded in New York City in 1760 by a young French immigrant, Pierre Abraham Lorillard. Pre-owned by my grandmother who was in the tobacco business from the 1940s to 1970s. This limited edition plate which measures approximately 10 7/8" in diameter has two gold rims as well as historica...l images of Lorillard's tobacco industry and in the center is a reprint of Lorillard's tobacco ad which ran in New York's The Daily Advertiser on June 30, 1789. This limited edition plate has the Roman Numeral I on the back and says "Authentic Early American History of The P. Lorillard Company" along with the Salem Company logo and "Lorillard Night Of Stars Chicago 1954" written in gold. For more information about the Lorillard company and this plate, please read below. There are issues on the plate which are indicative of its vintage age -- crazing, gold rubbing off in places. Plate weighs 1 lb. 8 oz. Provenance: This plate was owned by mygrandmother who had a wholesale tobacco business for over 40 years. I don't know how she got this plate other than that she was in attendance at the Lorrilard Company’s Night of Stars in 1954 asshe traveled the country and the world for her tobacco business before she sold her company to R. J. Reynolds in the late 1970s. In 1970 shewas named Woman of the Year by the National Tobacco Association.
From the Lorilland website’s history:“Lorillard, which was acquired by ReynoldsAmerican in 2015, was America’s first tobacco company — founded in New YorkCity in 1760 by a young French immigrant, Pierre Abraham Lorillard. Snuff washis specialty. Lorillard’s sons, Peter and George, eventually took over thebusiness. It was only in the 1900s that the company started producingcigarettes, including the introduction of Old Gold in 1926, Kent in 1952 and Newportmenthol in 1957. Newport would go on to become Lorillard’s flagship brand andan industry leader. Reynolds American, Inc. (RAI)acquired Lorillard, Inc. in June 2015, and that company’s menthol cigarettebrand, Newport, was added to the key-brands portfolio of R.J. Reynolds. At thesame time, R.J. Reynolds and Lorillard also divested certain brands, includingthe KOOL, Winston, Salem and Maverick cigarette brands and blu e-cigarettes, toImperial Tobacco Group PLC’s ITG Brands, LLC subsidiary.
